Focal Therapy
Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment
Try to stay calm. try not to be embarrassed to talk about your issues with your partner and healthcare professionals.
How this treatment impacted my life the most
I had a focal therapy, the HIFU. My recovery time was good and my symptons (mainly feeling the need to pee more regularly and some early loss of sexual function) recovered quickly by comparison to some stories I have heard relating to other treatments, particularly radical prostatectomy. I had some obstructive urinary symptoms around 9 months after the HIFU, which were caused by a build up of scar tissue. The symptoms were not pleasant, as I needed to go to the loo more often and sometimes had difficult passing pee but these symptoms were resolved by having a TURP 10 months after the original treatment, Whilst this set me back I still believe the treatment I had was rthe best pathway for me and at the date of writing I have come through the other side well. One of the biggest impacts on me was difference of opinion following my MRI and diagnosis. Those early days of not knowing the extent of the cancer and waiting on a diagnosis are difficult and is a period of time when support is vital,
If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?
Yes
Why did I give this answer?
Despite having to have some further treatment (a TURP) around 10 months after my HIFU, my HIFU has, overall, been a success. I was fortunate to be able to have the HIFU. It was the only other viable option for me to a radical prostatectomy. The TURP revealed benign tissue only after its removal and testing in April 2025 revealed my PSA score had come down to 0.26, having had a score of 15.7 in January 2024. Overall I have had generally minor side effects from the treatment, following the TURP.
