Active Surveillance
Tips and advice for any mental and emotional side effects of treatment
See a therapist , ideally one who specialises in cancer / ir has had cancer. Personally I was more comfortable speaking to a male therapist
How this treatment impacted my life the most
I am on Active surveillance. My first medical team were insistent that I should have a prostectamy. I refused as I was not sure that I would be able to deal with and or manage the side effects. This diagnosis affected me mentally - to a point where I was considering taking my own life. It was not so much the cancer - but the fear of the side effects. One year later - with a new medivcal team, and the plus 4 cancer has disappeared. The Consultant believes that I gave my body the tools to fight the cancer. IE, Exercise / diet/ fasting/ supplements/ vitamins. I am still on Active surveillance - but will only have a annual psa test now and another scan in 18 months
If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?
Not sure
Why did I give this answer?
Firstly I think it's essential that your GP let's you know of the consequences of having a positive PSA test. If I had know, I would not have had my initial PSA test. The mental anguish is something I do not want to go through again. Most men will have low grade 3+3 cancer. Only 15% of men actually need treatment. There's a lot of over treatment out there. If you have been diagnosed - please get a second opinion and do your own research
