Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

How this treatment impacted my life the most

I opted for a spared RALP. My only concern was the lack of mobility immediately after the op. I hadn't realised how important core strength is taken for granted. I found it difficult getting out of bed and standing up for a couple of days

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I have been on active surveillance since 2022. Prescribed Tablets to help with my poor flow symptoms. In July 2025 I suffered total bladder retention and required emergency hospital treatment - catheterisation. My condition was not considered urgent and eventually I saw a private consultant and was considered for aquablation. During my pre op tests the MRI scan identified a 12mm lesion within my prostate. I then underwent a biopsy where 22 tissue samples were tested. 1 tissue sample was cancer. My options were 1, remain on active surveillance (not recommended) 2, Continue with the aquablasia and active surveillance (not recommended) 3, Nerve sparing robotically assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. (recommended)

Active Surveillance

Tips and advice for any bladder or bowel side effects of treatment

I was originally prescribed tablets to help relax my pelvic area. The effect was minimal and I was still getting up 4-6 times a night to pee

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

Keep calm and carry on!

How this treatment impacted my life the most

The treatment wasn't really working and I started to identify foods and drinks that affected my retention. Dairy products and beer were removed from my menu. Eventually I started to feel anxious about travelling in case I couldn't pee

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Not sure

Why did I give this answer?

I should have insisted that my condition needed investigation and not medication
