Hormone therapy and radiotherapy

Do you have any tips or advice that may help others support those who are going through treatment, including with any ongoing side effects?

Talk to your close friends and be totally open with your family about what’s going on in our home we have 4 girls and it’s incredibly hard as it’s so personal to my partner. We made a decision from the beginning that we would always talk to them about what’s going on. It is hard being the partner of somebody with prostate cancer as you feel totally helpless, we just keep everything as normal as we can and talk about it when we need too but don’t dwell and just be positive and supportive to you partner, and understand they may just want to cancel something at short notice. The pain can be excruciating and they can’t sit for a long time but be patient and be supportive. Just love them

Please tell us how their treatment impacted your life the most.

We have only started the hormone treatment at the time of writing this and the radiotherapy will start soon. With the the hormones he has had quite a lot of body hair loss. He is very much a man’s man but while going through the hormone therapy he’s been slightly more emotional (he wouldn’t like to admit it) his anger levels are quicker to go from 1-10 in a matter of seconds but can go just as quick.. The biggest impact is our sex life it’s all but disappeared.

Thinking about your own wellbeing, what has helped you to cope, and where have you gone to find support? What tips and advice would you give to others?

I have thrown my self into my business (not ideal) as my coping mechanism but it has also givern me a chance to think about what I want for us out of life. So I have embarked on two training qualifications that will make a massive to our lives once completed one is a deep structure coaching and the other hypnotherapy both have been a passion for many years. My advice would be talk to your friends but listen to your self if you need to take your self off and have a cry do it, it is effecting you too.
