Chemotherapy

Tips and advice for any physical side effects of treatment

I walked 8,000 steps a day even though it was hard. I went vegetarian and gave up all sugar. No alcohol. I maintained a positive attitude. My wife was incredibly supportive. I kept away from negative thoughts and people.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

We live on a sailing boat and this year postponed our round the world trip. It bought my wife and myself closer. It made me more determined to make the most of every day and determined to get fit again.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I made a lot of life changes and this was just one of them. Between them they have already given me nine extra years. Why would I change it?

Hormone Therapy (injections and relugolix tablets)

How this treatment impacted my life the most

No sex. Poor sleep. Very happy to be alive.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I knocked my PSA from 643 to 0.

Radiotherapy

Tips and advice for any bladder or bowel side effects of treatment

I think this treatment affected me most as the side effects are longer lasting so think closely before opting for it. My consultant when I asked him if he would adopt it said he didn't know. But his wise advice was "make your decision and don't look back".

How this treatment impacted my life the most

Every afternoon for 42 days I had to make the 60 minute return journey to the hospital for treatment.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Not sure

Why did I give this answer?

I made a lot of lifestyle changes and I'm still alive 8 years later so something worked. I'll never know which change did the trick. Hormone treatment, chemo and watch and wait were I felt beneficial. Radiotherapy? I'm not so sure.

Watchful Waiting

Tips and advice for any bladder or bowel side effects of treatment

Every day watching and waiting is another day the cancer has been kept at bay. I have three monthly PSAs. It has crept to 3.3 but stabilised for several years. Make the most of every day.

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

It is what it is. Don't fret. Much easier with a loving, considerate partner.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

I have made many changes during the last 8 years following my diagnosis. Diet, mindfulness, continuing exercise, still learning at 72. We live full time on a sailing boat sailing round the world and my cancer is not at the front of my mind all the time. I have became more thankful for life and my relationship with my wife is stronger than ever. I am a very lucky man to still be alive 9 years after a PSA reading of 632.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

Life is good.
