Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

If offered, ensure you maintain the erectile dysfunction medication prescription, this has worked wonders for me. Also ensure strict use of vacuum pump to aid erection. Also daily squeezing of core muscles using the squeeze app.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

I was informed immediately after surgery that 50% of my nerves around the prostate were saved. This gave me encouragement that sexual activities would return. It has returned but has taken nearly 18 months for any meaningful improvement. This has affected me mentally as my sexual relationship with my wife has been a challenge as my confidence has been knocked together with a dredd of failure, which makes things even worse. Things are now improving but I’m wishful that my condition will improve further.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

Without doubt I would again elect for a prostatectomy as my cancer has gone and my tests so far have shown PSA levels less than 0.1. Although my sexual ability is improving and should continue to improve, I am eternally grateful to my GP for starting this journey and to Urology at Portsmouth for the care, guidance and ongoing support.
