Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)
Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment
Doing my Kegel's (PFE) religiously before the surgery and once the catheter was out has really helped my incontinence to the point that I’m pretty much dry now after 3 months. The NHS “Squeezy Man” app is highly recommended. As far as ED is concerned, I still have an active sex drive and I would advise anybody in the same boat to seek advice / treatment as soon as possible. The NHS has been superb but they sometimes need a little “push”. I am on daily and on “demand” medication which helps keep the blood flowing. I have also bought myself an inexpensive pump and adjustable ring and am exercising every day for 10 minutes - again to keep the blood flowing and reminding my penis what it’s supposed to do as and when my (single set) of nerves heal fully.
Tips and advice for any mental and emotional side effects of treatment
Surround yourself with a good network of friends who will listen to you. Talk, talk, talk - don’t keep it bottled up. I know it’s what most men do but this is not the time to be most men!! Join prostate support groups - there are loads and some are niche with other interests (sport, music, etc) bolted on
How this treatment impacted my life the most
Apart from the ED which is psychological as well as physical (probably more so) and which I am dealing with through the support of my fabulous wife and equally fabulous ED specialist, I would say it has made me reevaluate a lot of wat I do especially my work. I am now thinking about what I want to be and do in the future (when I grow up!!) and a lot of things that seemed important are less so now.
If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?
Yes
Why did I give this answer?
Bea cause I was generally fit and “young” at 58, I was a good candidate for surgery and I wanted the cancer gone completely if at all possible. My surgeon gave me great advice and told me (after I’d made the decision) that was what he would do if he was in the same situation. I feel fabulous 3 months after the surgery and just have to watch my energy levels as I’m still healing (and have to remind myself of that frequently)
