Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

How this treatment impacted my life the most

I'm waiting for treatment namely surgery. My mindset before diagnosis was positive; lets wait and see what we are dealing with before we start worrying or loosing sleep. The biopsy was over within an hour. I'm not suggesting it wasn't unpleasant and painful at times, but the pain was bearable and the consultant very reassuring. All in all it was great to have it completed quickly. The consultant took 30 samples and found 13 samples had cancer. Yes, being told the cancer was present was a wake up call, but I was being told it was my choice which treatment I selected which I found confusing. The real challenge was waiting for the CT and bone scan results to confirm the cancer had either spread or was contained. The nhs team worked extremely quickly to organise any cancellations. I was scanned within a week and seen by a specialist a week later. I then attended an appointment with my consultant who confirmed surgery appeared the correct choice given my age, health. It would not be possible to remove the prostrate after radiotherapy.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I have a family history of prostrate cancer with my brother diagnosed 4 yrs ago and my father died of prostrate cancer after 10 yrs from diagnosis. Both had radiotherapy treatment. I appear to have caught the cancer early having had regular PSA checks over the past few years. Notwithstanding the side effects; erectile dysfunction, etc I'm keen to have the cancer removed completely. I'll keep you posted on the side effects after surgery.
